DEEP ANALYSIS

Staying Mean to the One Thing That Makes You Mean

(Tilted Page) Official Mean (Music Video)

"There's constructive criticism, there's professional criticism and then there's just being mean. And there's a line that you cross when you just start to attack everything about a person."

The song addresses the particular injustice of working hard and still being dismissed before anyone looks closely enough. And the pain is sharper when that dismissal is public. Mean doesn't try to prove it's right. It just says: I'll keep going. And by the time I get where I'm going, you'll still be right where you are.

Mean is a song for someone who keeps walking even when people keep getting in the way—and it doesn't answer cruelty with cruelty. It answers with quiet confidence that things will be different one day.

The fact that Taylor performed this song at the 2012 Grammys and won Best Country Song in the same night was the kind of proof the song was always pointing toward—one that didn't require saying a single word more.

lyrics

All you are is mean, and a liar,

and pathetic, and alone in life

The most direct counter-punch in the song—and in the context of country pop, it lands with surprising force.

The Backstage Origins

The backstage theater setting reflects the pain of being a public figure who loves what they do but has to trade the doing of it for being judged by people who don't know them at all. The stage in front of the curtain belongs to everyone watching. The space behind the curtain is where the real feeling lives. This illustration takes the viewer to the side no one sees. The banjo in the scene is a symbol of origins. Taylor has spoken about country music as a genre she loves because it tells stories well. That root is still here even when everything around it is trying to make you forget where you came from.
